Dr. Flo Watt MRCPsych (Consultant Psychiatrist) says

A person's brain functions by sending and altering messages sent between the numerous nerves. To pass the message from one nerve ending to another, chemicals (known as neurotransmittors) are released in various combinations depending on what the desired function is.

It is when this function gets out of balance for whatever reason that a person can experience anxiety and poor sleep.

A number of different neurotransmittors have been identified and studied and these form the basis of the conventional medications used by the mental health services. GABA( Gamma Amino Butyric Acid) is a specific neurotransmittor which has an inhibitory(calming) effect on the nerve cells which means it has a resultant calming and anti-anxiety effect on the individual as a whole.

If a person is suffering from symptoms of severe or prolonged anxiety symptoms, then they should speak to their GP, particularly if there seems to be no trigger or reason for this. If, however, there is a definite stressful event or symptoms are not severe then preparations containing valerian such as Stress Remedy , can be effective. Valerian is converted into valerinic acid and valerinol once in the body. These substances have been shown to act in various clinical studies by enhancing the effects of GABA and therefore have anti anxiety properties.

From a personal point of view I have used valerian preparations when feeling anxious about specific problems or when I find I cannot sleep very well(unfortunately a fairly frequent event!). I found I did not like the feeling that oral preparations gave, a "peak" in the system before wearing off rather than a more steady level. I have found since using the diffuser my sleep has been more even throughout the night as the release of the active preparation over a period of time appears to avoid this problem.

Mrs Rosie McGregor (from Teignmouth) has been using Stress Remedy for over 6 months and finds Stress Remedy has helped reduce her anxiety levels, and now finds her quality of sleep much improved.

Mrs Gaynor Judge (from Totnes) has used Stress Remedy for over 9 months and found the slow release of Valerian properties through the plug diffuser helpful in reducing feelings of stress and anxiety.

Mrs Sara Smith (from Exeter) has used Stress Remedy in her son's bedroom and found its slow release calming effects beneficial for her son who has been diagnosed with ADHD.

Why It Works

Why does it work
Active ingredients in Valerian are Valerinic acid and Valerenol. Clinical studies have shown these substances de-stress and calm by enhancing production of a neurotransmitter called GABA (Gamma Amino Butyric Acid). GABA has an inhibitory effect (ie. Calms the nerve); and is a natural chemical produced by the brain, transmitted from nerve to nerve as a chemical calming message when the body is stressed.

A study in the Neuropharmacology journal (2009) shows GABA receptors having an affinity for Valerinic acid and Valerinol, and shows them to have a marked anti anxiety effect in humans and other mammals.

The diffuser will also prove beneficial to pets that share your home.

Instructions for use
Unscrew bottle cap and insert bottle firmly into plug-in diffuser. Leave switched on for duration of treatment which is 4 - 6 weeks. When using travel diffuser, remove plug in from socket and carefully pull out the bottle. Squeeze 2 - 3 drops of liquid onto the diffuser pad.
